In international freight transport, the first delay occurred at the start of the lockdown in 2020, when containers were unable to leave Asian ports due to the pandemic. Added to this was the incident in the Suez Canal. Roedeske already had to factor in price increases for his massage chairs due to supply shortages for the 2021 holiday season. The situation in Shanghai remains uncertain due to COVID-19, and the congestion of ocean-going vessels has still not been resolved. “There’s little point in rushing into action right now. We have to be very patient and weather the situation,” says Michael Roedeske. When it comes to his customers, he’s never at a loss for new ideas and had already stocked the warehouses in Remshalden and an expansion facility in Fellbach with 75% of his product range at the beginning of the year. Nevertheless, delays may occur for some of his products: About ten loaded ocean-going vessels are currently still backed up in the Elbe Canal off Hamburg, while 100 more are waiting to enter the ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam. From the air, this congestion over the North Sea is clearly visible, pushing ports and personnel to their limits as they unload the containers. Even massage chairs that were ordered a long time ago are among the goods still at sea.
Relaxation is needed across the board
“Dockworkers in particular, who are currently having to work hundreds of extra shifts, could really use a massage chair right now,” Roedeske muses. For him, his products are more than just wellness: they promote health for both body and mind. “That’s something that’s immensely important today. It feels like we’ve been living in a state of emergency for two years now. The pandemic has been followed by the Ukraine crisis, and the tension shows no signs of letting up.” Massage chairs provide intentional breaks and relaxation in the truest sense of the word—both of which Roedeske considers indispensable parts of everyday life.
