Most people who come here already know that the armchair will be in use every day—not just as a piece of furniture that visitors try out once in a while.
What Changes When You Insert It
Here, too, the chair first scans your back—only more precisely. It determines your shoulder height and, depending on the model, also measures the length of your legs and where your pelvis sits in the chair.
The difference becomes apparent in the first few minutes. The rollers now also vary in depth. In one spot, they go deeper into the back; in the next, they pull back. A kneading motion intensifies, then eases off, and starts again a little further down. The pressure is no longer applied evenly everywhere.
That's the moment when your perception shifts. You feel something working on your back instead of rollers moving beneath it.
After three to five minutes, the air cushions are added. They support your calves, secure your feet, and apply lateral pressure while the rollers continue to work at the top. The rollers massage, and the air cushions position your body so that you can better benefit from the massage.
Technically speaking, that means 3D instead of 2D. In practice, it means that the movement changes—just as a hand doesn't move along the same path with the same force for 15 minutes.
When two people use the same armchair
He’s 1.88 m tall and likes it firm; she’s 1.67 m tall and prefers it soft. In the entry-level category, a chair like this often fits one of them well and the other just okay. The more people who use it, the more important it is how precisely it adapts to each person’s body. In this category, that’s where it starts to work.
Where the line is drawn
The chair tailors the massage to you. It treats different areas of your body with roughly the same intensity.
In the next level up, separate techniques are used: kneading is done on top while pressure is applied below at the same time. And the adjustments become more precise. Instead of applying one strong pressure across the entire back, you specify: gentler on the neck, firmer on the shoulders, and deeper on the lower back.
This is a general trend within the category, not a pricing rule. A good massage chair for €5,500 may perform better with a specific type of massage than a less powerful one for €7,000. The price range helps you narrow down your options, not make a decision.
Please take a seat
There are too many options in this category to go through them all. You can try out two or three armchairs one after another while sitting down in just half an hour, and afterward you'll know more than you would after three evenings of poring over comparison charts.
