Anyone standing here has already worn out five or six good armchairs. At €5,000, it was fine. At €7,000, too. And somewhere up here comes the line that really matters: it hits the spot for my back.
What's getting even more precise
In this class, the chair doesn't just measure where your shoulders are. It tracks the curve of your back at multiple points and regulates the pressure along that curve; on some models, this can be adjusted separately at eight points.
Don't expect an "aha" moment in the first ten seconds. A good chair from the next lower class often seems just as convincing in the first few minutes. The difference becomes apparent later: after a quarter of an hour, this chair still supports you exactly where others have started to become uncomfortable. There are fewer spots where the casters suddenly sink too deep or lose contact. The lumbar support can be firm, while the sensitive area in between remains unobtrusive.
Custom mechanisms for the neck and calves
This is the most significant leap forward in this class. Some models feature a second massage unit in the head and neck area. This means the back mechanism no longer has to try to reach the neck at the very top, because there’s a separate system working there.
If, when trying out chairs in each class, you say the same thing—namely, that they're all good for your back, but none of them really support your neck—then that's your reason for choosing this class. Another one.
The difference is just as noticeable on the calf. Air cushions expand, compress, and release. A mechanical calf massage kneads the calf, shifts the pressure, and moves along the calf as it goes. These are two different things, and you’ll notice the difference right away.
When the Chair Moves Your Body
Here, “stretching” means more than just a backrest that reclines. Air cushions hold the shoulders and legs in place, then the backrest and leg section change position, causing different parts of the body to move against one another. The rollers continue to operate while this happens. On the top-of-the-line models, the arms and legs move independently of one another, one at a time, with the legs raised well above heart level.
It feels different from a massage. The chair moves you.
And here’s an honest word of caution: If you have acute back problems, a history of herniated discs, or are currently undergoing treatment, please do not choose intense stretching and traction functions based solely on a sales description. Please consult your doctor or therapist. We’ll demonstrate the programs in the showroom, and we’ll also turn them off for you.
Where the price stops telling us anything about the massage
Up through the mid-range, "more expensive" usually means "better." Beyond that, that's no longer true.
Above about €10,000, the premium is reflected in three very different areas: the massage itself—that is, special mechanisms and more precise controls; the construction—that is, elaborate rails, reclining, and stretching movements; and the design, country of manufacture, control system, lighting, audio, and materials. Only the first of these is something you can actually feel in your back.
It's like with cars. An S-Class doesn't get you from Stuttgart to Munich three times better than a car that costs a third of the price. It does things more smoothly and quietly, and some people want exactly that. You can't go wrong with an S-Class, and yet not everyone drives one.
What We Warn Against in This Class
The higher the price range, the less you should base your purchase on the spec sheet. That may sound counterintuitive, but it's what we've observed at the show.
5D isn't automatically more comfortable than 4D. Two mechanisms aren't necessarily better than one very good one. 70 airbags aren't better than 30 well-placed ones; hardly anyone uses 50 programs; and the AI specs on the data sheet say nothing about how the chair feels. A dedicated neck mechanism might be the reason one person buys the chair, while for another it might simply be too intense.
Two practical considerations that often get overlooked in the brochure: The heaviest models weigh over 160 kg, and the chair must fit your body. A technically simpler chair that fits your measurements will feel better than the most expensive one that doesn’t.
Please take a seat
The phrase we use here to guide every consultation: Show me how that more expensive chair supports your back better. If you can't feel the difference, there's no reason to pay the extra.
This is where the price list ends as a quality ranking. For you, 9,500 € might be the perfect massage; for someone else, it might be 13,000 €; and you can spend 20,000 € without getting a massage that feels twice as good. Which one is right for you is something you’ll decide once you sit down.
