Panasonic has been manufacturing massage chairs since 1969, but withdrew from the European market in 2025. As a result, new models are not currently available for sale here; what you can still find are remaining stock and used units. For one of the industry’s best-known brands, this marks a turning point that changes the situation for both current owners and prospective buyers. Here’s an overview: history, models, and the issue of replacement parts.

The Brand: Massage Electronics Since 1935

Panasonic, founded in Osaka in 1918 by Konosuke Matsushita, has been in the massage business longer than almost anyone else: In 1935, the company introduced a portable electromagnetic massager, followed in 1969 by its first massage chair—making it the first major corporation in the industry to do so. This makes Panasonic—along with Fujiiryoki and Family Inada—one of the industry’s founding trio, and here, too, the trail leads back to the Greater Osaka area. The chairs have been manufactured in China for decades; development of the Real-Pro series, however, has remained in Japan.

Withdrawal from Europe in 2025

In 2025, Panasonic ceased sales of massage chairs in Europe and has since focused on other markets, primarily North America and Asia. For Germany, this means, specifically, that no new units will be available in stores; retailers are selling off remaining inventory, and that’s it. It remains to be seen how long replacement parts for the European models will remain available. Anyone who has been considering a Panasonic now faces a choice: secure one from remaining inventory now, buy a used one, or look at brands that continue to supply Europe.

The latest-generation models

The Real-Pro series is still available in the U.S.; however, the models sold there are not certified for Europe and require a different line voltage. Importing them is therefore not a practical solution.

The EP-MA70 in Detail

The Real Pro Hot Stone is still the most sought-after model today—and rightly so. It gets its name from the Hot Stone feature: Heated massage heads are used on your back and feet, so the heat reaches exactly where the heads are kneading. It also features the Junetsu technique, which mimics a massage therapist’s circular thumb movements; a body scan using pressure sensors that detects height, shoulder position, and spinal alignment; 108 massage variations; and 6 automatic programs. Do you own a Panasonic, or are you thinking of buying one?

For owners, the following applies: Your device comes from a product line that is still in production, so the situation is significantly better than with brands that have been completely discontinued, such as SANYO, which was absorbed by Panasonic in 2011. However, the official distribution channel in Europe is a thing of the past, which means that every repair must be handled on a case-by-case basis. If you encounter any problems, first check whether your warranty is still valid and who handles it.

For prospective buyers, the situation is different: A used or clearance Panasonic chair may be a good product, but you’re buying into a brand with no future in Europe. Honestly compare it to a new Japanese chair with a full warranty, such as one from the Japanese massage chair collection. And if you want your old Panasonic chair to make way for something new: trade in your old one for a new one.
