2D, 3D, and 4D in Massage Chairs: An Explanation of the Differences

2D, 3D, 4D, and 5D describe how the massage rollers move. What the numbers mean, why 4D doesn't refer to intensity, and at what point a massage chair actually measures the body.

Anyone comparing massage chairs will immediately come across terms like 2D, 3D, and 4D. The numbers sound like they indicate a progression, as if more is always better. In fact, they describe something quite straightforward: the number of directions in which the massage rollers can move. Here’s what that means for your back.

2D: up and down, left and right

In 2D mode, the rollers move in two directions: one along the spine up and down, and the other sideways to the right and left, roughly to reach the shoulders. That was the technology used in the first massage chairs, and it’s still found in many entry-level models today.

The rollers move across your back on a fixed plane. How deeply they work depends solely on how hard you lean into them.

3D: Depth Is Added

3D adds a third dimension: depth. The rollers move forward into your back and back again, traveling several centimeters depending on the model. This allows you, for the first time, to adjust the intensity of the massage independently of your body weight.

This is the most noticeable difference for the neck and upper back. In a household where several people use the same armchair, this is the more important factor: What feels comfortable to one person may be too much for another.

4D: the same technology at different speeds

This is often explained incorrectly, even in brochures. 4D does notmean an even stronger massage, nor does the chair respond to your back. 4D means that the massage robot can perform its movements at different speeds.

Here's an example. In 3D, you tap at a steady pace. In 4D, there's a fast tap and a slow one, a fast knead and a slow one. The same technique, different speeds, and transitions in between.

It is precisely this variation that makes all the difference in how it feels. An armchair without it operates as evenly as a metronome, and after two minutes, the body recognizes it as a machine. Human hands cannot maintain a steady pace. 4D replicates this, though it is hard-coded: what runs faster and when is determined by the program, not by your back.

5D: Pressure Becomes a Strength

With 5D, a fifth adjustable parameter is added: pressure. Not as a setting you adjust once, but as a value that the chair automatically adjusts during the massage.

This is made possible by a pressure sensor built into the mechanism. It measures how hard a muscle presses against the rollers. A tight, tense muscle yields less than a relaxed one, and the control system receives this exact difference as a measurement. From this, it determines how stiff the area is at that moment and adjusts the force while the treatment is in progress.

This is different from the body scan at the beginning. That one measures the shape: With “ Fujiiryoki ,” AI Double Sensing first determines the height of your shoulders and then maps the curve of your spine using 8 points. This geometry is then fixed. The pressure sensor, on the other hand, measures the condition—and does so continuously. Together, these two factors result in a massage that may differ between the first and tenth cycles because your back will have become more relaxed by then.

To be honest, there is no industry standard for these numbers.Fujiiryoki itself does not explain anywhere on its website why the method is called “5D,” and other brands sometimes use the same number to refer to something different. Therefore, don’t ask about the number; instead, ask whether the chair takes measurements during the massage or simply runs a program.

Don't Confuse Them: Health Sensors

Some recliners also measure certain bodily parameters that have nothing to do with the massage mechanism. The Skyliner III from Casada features a pulse oximeter that monitors heart rate, oxygen saturation, and fatigue levels. The BioVis from OGAWA detects bioelectrical signals and analyzes them.

These are additional features, not another dimension. They provide information about your condition, but they do not determine how the rollers operate. If a sales pitch lumps the two together, it’s worth asking: Does the reading control the massage, or is it just displayed?

What does that mean for the purchase?

More dimensions cost more money. Whether they’re worth it depends on what you’re looking for. If you just want to relax your back, 2D will do the trick. If you have stiff spots in your neck or share the chair with someone else, you’ll definitely notice the difference with 3D. 4D is especially worthwhile if you sit in the chair every day and don’t want the massage to feel like a machine.
