Fibromyalgia is a condition that is often misunderstood and causes a long and painful ordeal for many of those affected. About two percent of adults in Germany are affected by the condition, with women being affected about six times more often. This chronic condition is characterized by widespread pain throughout the body, which is often accompanied by fatigue, sleep problems, and cognitive impairments.
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition. This means it cannot be cured, which is why treatment focuses on alleviating symptoms and improving the quality of life for those affected. People with fibromyalgia often experience symptoms to varying degrees, which makes the condition difficult to understand—both for healthcare professionals and for those affected.
In the following, we will take a closer look at the symptoms and causes to better understand the clinical picture of fibromyalgia. We also want to explore ways to relieve symptoms and consider massage as a gentle option.

Fibromyalgia: Symptoms and Comorbidities

The symptoms of fibromyalgia are varied and affect not only the body but also the mind. Typical symptoms include widespread pain in various parts of the body, often near joints, muscles, and tendons. The pain often starts in one part of the body but spreads to other areas.
For most people with fibromyalgia, the pain is accompanied by extreme tiredness or even exhaustion, which often develops into chronic fatigue (ME/CFS). Sleep disturbances and difficulty concentrating are common complaints. These are often referred to as “fibro-fog.” This term is meant to illustrate just how debilitating the symptoms can be; those affected feel as if they are in a fog.
Many people with fibromyalgia also suffer from comorbid conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome or other chronic pain conditions such as migraines or endometriosis, which makes managing the condition even more difficult.
There are usually periods when the symptoms almost disappear, followed by times of intense discomfort—known as flare-ups—that can severely limit daily life. But how do these symptoms—and, above all, the disease itself—develop?
Causes of Fibromyalgia
The exact causes of fibromyalgia are still largely unknown, which is what makes the condition so difficult to treat. Scientists believe that various factors interact to trigger the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Genetic predisposition plays an important role, as do disorders of the central nervous system. Stress, trauma, or infections could also be triggers.
It is believed that those affected develop increased sensitivity to pain because the nervous system reacts more strongly than usual to stimuli. This hypersensitivity means that even harmless touches can cause pain. What happens if these causes go untreated? The consequences include psychological distress, stress, and a daily life that is severely limited by the symptoms.

Fibromyalgia Diagnosis—The Path to Greater Clarity

Since there are no specific tests to definitively confirm the condition, diagnosing fibromyalgia is often a challenge for doctors and patients alike. Many people with the condition must endure a long period of suffering before they are suspected of having fibromyalgia and subsequently diagnosed with it.
Healthcare professionals typically diagnose the condition by ruling out other conditions similar to fibromyalgia and examining typical pain points (known as “tender points”). The process of reaching a diagnosis can be frustrating for many. The fact that over three million adults in Germany are affected by fibromyalgia underscores the importance of receiving appropriate and timely treatment.
The Effects of Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia affects every aspect of a person’s life. Chronic pain, extreme fatigue, and limited physical functioning impact not only their professional life but, of course, their personal life as well.
This is followed by a struggle against a reduced quality of life and social isolation, as the persistent symptoms make it difficult to participate in everyday activities. This can often lead to mental health issues such as depression or anxiety, which frequently accompany the condition. Everyday life can become a real challenge—and this is precisely where most treatment options are specifically aimed.
Treatment Options for Fibromyalgia
Since fibromyalgia is a chronic condition, treatment is primarily aimed at relieving pain and improving the quality of life for those affected—there is currently no cure.
An interdisciplinary team of physicians, pain specialists, neurologists, psychologists, and physical therapists is crucial for successful treatment. This team of experts helps reduce fibromyalgia symptoms and supports patients in their daily lives. The approaches to treatment can vary and depend on the individual symptoms of each fibromyalgia patient.

Fibromyalgia: Medication
For fibromyalgia, pain relievers or antidepressants are often prescribed to relieve pain and stabilize mood. These medications can help reduce pain levels, allowing those affected to participate more actively in life again.
Nevertheless, it is important to use these medications under a doctor’s supervision and to carefully adjust the dosage to minimize side effects. Common pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen are not recommended for fibromyalgia. It is not uncommon for people with fibromyalgia to have to try out different medications in consultation with their doctors until they find the right one.
Fibromyalgia: Treatment Without Medication

As an alternative, there are also non-pharmacological therapies for treating fibromyalgia. Exercise, heat, a targeted diet, and relaxation techniques are among the most effective ways to relieve pain and improve quality of life.
Many people with this condition benefit from regular activities such as swimming or yoga, which gently strengthen the muscles and improve flexibility. Heat treatments, such as hot water bottles or heat patches, help relax tense muscles and relieve discomfort. A balanced, anti-inflammatory diet can also help manage symptoms.
Relaxation techniques such as meditation or breathing exercises promote inner peace and can reduce stress, which can worsen symptoms. A good combination of these approaches can significantly improve the well-being of those affected. Massages can also be part of a treatment plan.
Massages for Fibromyalgia
Massages are a proven method for relieving pain associated with fibromyalgia and relaxing the muscles. They help to specifically loosen tense areas and promote blood circulation.
Particularly gentle massage techniques such as manual lymphatic drainage or Shiatsu have proven to be helpful. These techniques apply gentle pressure to the affected areas and can thus help relieve pain without causing additional stress to the body.
Massage Chairs for Everyday Relaxation
Massage chairs are a wonderful addition to fibromyalgia treatment, as they provide regular relaxation as part of daily life. They allow those affected to treat themselves to a soothing massage on a regular basis with minimal effort—right in the comfort of their own homes.
Massage chairs offer a variety of programs that can be customized to specifically target muscle tension and enhance well-being. These regular relaxation sessions are particularly important for people with fibromyalgia, as they help relieve pain and make daily life more manageable.
