It’s no coincidence that massages are among the most popular wellness treatments worldwide—they help us achieve a state of absolute well-being. After a session, we feel relaxed and rejuvenated; our bodies are loosened up, internal and external blockages are released, and our energy flow is stimulated. Toxins are flushed out and feel-good hormones are released. So there’s no denying that massages are as much a part of our daily lives as the air we breathe!
Many cultures have recognized the benefits of kneading therapy and apply it in a wide variety of ways. That’s why there is such a long list of massage techniques. To help you make your choice a little easier, we’ll take a closer look at some of them.
From the Far North—The Swedish Way of Massage
In the 19th century, Swedish fencing champion Pehr Henrik Ling devoted himself to developing a massage method—relatively late compared to other cultures. This very traditional treatment focuses on the muscles and joints, which are loosened through kneading, rubbing, and stroking. As an athlete, Ling understood the essential benefits of massage, such as relieving tension, strengthening muscles, reducing stress, and alleviating pain. This likely prompted him to explore the effects of massage in general. Today, his technique is one of the most widely practiced forms of massage in Europe, particularly in Germany.
A session lasts about 1 hour and is performed either in the nude or in underwear.
Japanese Shiatsu Massage
Everyone is familiar with Shiatsu massage. Derived from traditional Chinese medicine, the Shiatsu method originated in Japan. There, this ancient massage technique is used successfully and is also gaining increasing recognition in the Western world. Shiatsu can be translated as “finger pressure.” This means that pressure is applied—using the fingers as well as the palms—to specific points on areas of the body that are causing discomfort. Stimulating points located on the meridians—the channels that connect throughout the body—known as acupressure points, is particularly effective. The goal of Shiatsu massage is to activate and promote the circulation of life energy, or “Qi.” People who feel exhausted, tired, stressed, anxious, or tense benefit particularly from this method. Pain relief is also a major benefit, which is why Shiatsu is so popular.
Loose, comfortable clothing is recommended for the one-hour massage.
From the U.S. — The California Massage
Developed in the 1970s in the Sunshine State of California, this form of massage also made its way to Germany in the 1990s. Although the Californian massage does not have a long tradition, it certainly has a bright future ahead of it. It is a very gentle treatment. Thanks to the massage oil used, the hands literally glide over the body, gently caressing it, carefully kneading it, and providing gentle stretches. As soon as relaxation sets in, the intensity can be increased. The goal of this technique is to let go, surrender, and achieve complete relaxation—both physically and mentally. Leave your stress and pressures behind and enjoy the gentle touches. The 60 minutes that such a session typically lasts fly by faster than you’d like. If you feel uncomfortable being unclothed, you can wear a bathrobe or underwear.
The Complex Thai Massage
It is complex because it draws on many different influences and practices. Thai massage is a blend of techniques from traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic influences, Buddhist beliefs, and yoga exercises. At first, one expects a massage to relieve tension in tight areas of the body, but not to cause pain. Although it may seem paradoxical, you may experience pain at sensitive points under certain circumstances. However, this subsides from session to session, and then the true effects of the Thai method become apparent. You’ll feel the stress and pressure melt away, the tension release, the muscles tone up, and a sense of physical and mental relief. In Thailand, massage is used to prevent health problems.
A session can last between 1 hour and 90 minutes, during which you should ideally wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing.
Ayurvedic massage originates from the Indian subcontinent
India is the birthplace of all massage techniques, as it is the origin of the world’s oldest massage method. As with Chinese medicine, this practice has its roots in traditional medicine—Ayurveda. Holism is the guiding principle of this millennia-old therapy, which views the human being as a whole. Body, mind, and spirit all influence our health and should always be examined and treated in unison. Maintaining and stabilizing their balance is an essential component of Ayurvedic philosophy. Massage is used as a proven method to achieve this. Oil is applied to enhance the therapeutic effect, helping the body to relax, strengthen, and “detoxify”—from negative environmental influences and stress. Depending on the treatment needs, the session lasts between 15 and 120 minutes. The client may wear underwear or be undressed during the treatment.
Oriental massage is popular not only in the Orient
Oriental massage has become particularly well-established in the Mediterranean region. This form of massage is offered and performed in hammams, or steam baths. It actually consists of two parts: the traditional steam bath and the full-body massage that follows. During the steam bath, the body warms up and begins to relax a little. The skin’s pores open, promoting the elimination of harmful substances. In this state, the body is well-prepared for the one-hour massage. Argan oil, which originates from Morocco, is frequently used in the treatment. Thanks to the still-open pores, the body can not only release toxins but also absorb nourishing essences. The full-body massage involves gentle treatment of the front and back as well as all areas of the body, from head to toe. The result is a deeply felt sense of relaxation and a happy, comforting feeling. Like the steam bath, the massage is performed without clothing or in swimwear.
Balinese Massage – Relaxing Greetings from the Island
The elements of this massage technique are based on methods from Chinese, Indonesian, and Indian healing traditions. It is performed in two phases. The manual treatment—which involves stroking, kneading, rubbing, and applying pressure using essential oils—is followed by the “awakening phase.” For this phase, you assume a seated position and the therapist performs final stretches on you. The massage promotes both relaxation and revitalization. The two phases take approximately 60–90 minutes. For the rubdowns and stretching exercises, it is best to be unclothed or wear only underwear.
How Relaxing Is Korean Massage?
Are you looking for pure relaxation in a wonderfully gentle way? Then the Korean massage is just the thing for you! It involves no rubbing, stimulation, pressure, or kneading. Instead, the therapist gently rocks the body back and forth. This passive movement of the body is a fluid process. The exercises stretch the muscles and gently shake the limbs, creating a slight vibration. No other method has such a relaxing effect. Wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, you’ll achieve complete relaxation within an hour.
Get a massage while sitting
The Amma massage originated in Japan and is performed while seated in an ergonomic chair. American massage therapist David Palmer ensured that this method—which has proven particularly effective for alleviating discomfort in the shoulders, neck, back, and upper extremities—is offered to employees at many large corporations. In Germany, too, the benefits of this health-promoting practice have become widely known. It requires no extensive equipment or preparation, and after just 15 minutes, participants feel a significant improvement in their symptoms as well as an energy boost. It’s perfect for relieving pent-up and debilitating stress in everyday work life and preventing related health issues. You can participate in the express session in your everyday clothes.
(Foot) Reflexology
Our feet contain four reflex zones, and treating them has an effect on other parts of the body. And who invented this? The Chinese! Depending on which reflex zone is stimulated, you’ll simultaneously feel a positive response in another connected area or organ of the body. In addition to the feet, you can also find such reflex zones on the face and hands. However, the feet are the most accurate reflection of our health, and treating them offers the greatest promise of success. The fact that you can achieve such a sense of well-being through the feet is truly fantastic and impressive. Ideally, you should set aside an hour to thoroughly stimulate all the zones. Take off your socks, and relax!
Massage chairs and other forms of massage
Of course, we can’t cover every type of massage, and you might also be interested in Kobido or Kashmiri massage, as well as the various sports massages. We’ve chosen to focus on the types that are most commonly offered in Germany and are certainly available in your area as well. Our massage chairs can provide most of the massage types and techniques mentioned here by mimicking the necessary hand movements. While they will never fully replace the human hand, they can achieve nearly the same level of relaxation for users. These are massage robots that can perfectly replicate the soothing techniques and healing arts of a professional massage.
We broadly define a massage as a superficial treatment of the body, usually as part of a wellness program. From a legal standpoint, massage for therapeutic and medical purposes is reserved for trained professionals such as physical therapists, osteopaths, and other recognized practitioners in this field. For this purpose, a doctor issues a prescription stating the intended treatment goal.
Which type of massage has proven to be the most effective?
It’s not possible to say definitively which massage technique is the best. Because everyone is different, needs and expectations vary widely. The massage that best suits your personal preferences is the best one for you! Determine what you need from a treatment and try out different massages to see which one proves to be the most effective for you.
What is a body-to-body massage?
During a body-to-body massage, you come very close to the therapist’s body, which requires a certain degree of trust. This form of massage also has no sexual motives or undertones whatsoever. The therapist uses his or her body as a massage tool to help you relax. Through dance-like movements, participants can exchange energy.
Which massage will give me the most relaxation?
The most important prerequisite for achieving a sense of relaxation is the ability to let yourself be guided by the treatment. Don’t let your thoughts distract you or hold onto them; instead, let them go to make room for positive energy. Have faith in the therapy and the massage therapist, let yourself go, and don’t lose your belief or confidence in the treatment’s effectiveness. Recommended methods include Californian, Korean, Balinese, Oriental, and Amma massage.
