How effective are massages, really?
We’ve all experienced this in our daily lives: when we sit at our desks for long periods and our bodies let us know that something isn’t quite right. We feel a twinge, a pulling sensation, and sometimes even intense pain. Whether it’s in our back, neck, shoulders, or legs, the first thing we instinctively do is massage the affected area, stretch, or do some light stretching. It usually feels good, and if we do it “right” and hit the spot exactly, the soothing effect can even last for quite a while. But there are also those who question massages and their effectiveness. Massage therapists are repeatedly accused of making false claims about healing or of being generally ineffective. What are wellness massages, what are therapeutic massages, and what doesn’t work at all?
In this article, we’ll explain just how effective massages really are. We’d like to give you an insight into the benefits attributed to massages and the situations in which they can be beneficial to your health. There’s no doubt that the range of applications is diverse.

The Wellness Massage—Relaxation for Body and Mind
One of the main benefits of massage is simply that it helps us relax. It allows us to unwind, forget the stresses of everyday life, and lose ourselves in the pleasant, rhythmic movements. That, in itself, is the goal of a wellness massage—a soothing treatment that simply makes us feel better afterward. This type of massage is often accompanied by calming sounds or scents, as well as heat treatments.
Even though this type of massage is not claimed to have any medical benefits, the factor of stress reduction and its positive effect on people should not be overlooked. After all, mental well-being cannot be completely separated from physical well-being. In addition to wellness massages, there are, of course, therapeutic massages.
Therapeutic Massage—Treatment of Symptoms and Medical Conditions
Therapeutic massages, as the name suggests, aim to relieve symptoms and improve one’s state of health. The effects of massage are based on human experience dating back thousands of years. They are known to alleviate certain illnesses or symptoms or to support the healing process.
Medically prescribed massages range from rehabilitation to pain relief. Let’s therefore take a look at the potential effects of these treatments.

How Massages Work
What effects can kneading, tapping, and stroking have on the body? Even though there isn't consistent scientific evidence to support them, there are numerous applications for massage that are based on centuries of experience and observation.
Relaxing the muscles and relieving tension
Muscle tension and stiffness are usually caused by improper movement and overexertion. Perhaps you, too, have found yourself slightly altering your movement patterns due to an injury. For example, when experiencing knee pain, many people put more weight on their healthy knee to take the pressure off the sore one. This leads to improper movement and overexertion in the healthy area, resulting in further discomfort. The same is often true for poor posture or improper movements during sports or at work.
Tension that develops in this way can be effectively relieved through targeted massages, thereby alleviating discomfort in the affected areas. However, the underlying causes and circumstances must be identified separately from the treatment in order to resolve the issue permanently.
Promoting Blood Circulation
Treating an area of the body by tapping, kneading, and stroking easily leads to short-term redness. We’ve all experienced this effect when we rub a spot on our skin a little more intensely for a few seconds. This is because blood flow increases in the affected area.
Blood transports nutrients and oxygen, among other things, and is responsible for regulating our body’s temperature. Increased blood flow is therefore intended to improve the supply of nutrients and oxygen to areas experiencing discomfort, thereby supporting the healing process. Additionally, deposits and “waste products” that accumulate during the healing process can be removed more quickly via the bloodstream, which is said to facilitate faster healing.
Support for Wound Healing
Because of the blood circulation-boosting effects of massage, it is particularly well-suited for stimulating and supporting wound healing. The most important rule is: Never massage fresh wounds. For scars or wounds that healed some time ago, massage can certainly help accelerate cell regeneration. However, in this specific case, a medical evaluation is the top priority to ensure that the treatment does not have the opposite effect. Connective tissue massages are also frequently used in this context.
Pain Relief
Especially in cases of chronic pain, regular massages can help relieve pain or even provide temporary relief, even if they do not eliminate the pain entirely. Here, too, the cause of the pain should be determined by a doctor, and a separate treatment plan should be followed. Massage can serve as a complementary therapy to help relieve pain.

Treating Sleep Disorders
Massages are said to have not only physical but also psychological benefits. In particular, they focus on reducing stress and enhancing well-being, and often lead to improvements in anxiety or inner restlessness. Deeper, uninterrupted sleep can have an impact not only on mental health but also on overall physical health. After all, sleep is the most important means of regeneration for humans.
Promises of Healing – Can Massages Heal?

Although the medical benefits of massage have not been consistently scientifically substantiated in conventional medicine, they are based on centuries of experience. Massage is used in sports, is prescribed by many doctors due to its diverse effects, and definitely contributes to our well-being.
Since massages cannot be patented or marketed by a large corporation, studies on their effects regarding specific diseases and for the purpose of approval as a treatment method are unlikely to be conducted. This inevitably means that no healing promises may be made regarding massages, even though there are numerous cases in which people have already had positive experiences with them.
While some medical professionals view massage as an effective treatment method, there are also critical voices that put this into perspective. According to them, active mobilization is generally preferable to massage when treating symptoms. This includes physical therapy and the development of flexibility and muscle strength to strengthen the body and the affected area. Some experts believe this is the more sustainable long-term method for correcting and preventing misalignments and improper movement patterns.
Are massages good for your health?
In summary, massages have a positive effect on physical well-being. They relax and loosen up the body, thereby supporting your mobility. If you have specific medical conditions, you should always consult a doctor to determine whether massage is a viable treatment option. Getting a regular massage is also a matter of self-worth. Do you want to do something good for yourself? Do you make a point of setting aside time for relaxation and recovery? Perhaps the positive effects of a massage are so difficult to summarize on a package insert precisely because they take this holistic approach to well-being.
