Workplace Health Management: Massages at Berger & Rentschler GmbH & Co. KG
On average, German office workers spend just under 80,000 hours sitting during their working lives. That fact alone shows the significant impact that our daily work routine has on our mobility—and thus on our health. That’s reason enough to take a closer look at workplace health initiatives. On average, German office workers spend just under 80,000 hours sitting during their working lives. That fact alone shows the significant impact that our daily work routine has on our mobility—and thus on our health. That’s reason enough to take a closer look at workplace health initiatives. From the employees’ perspective, it’s clear that their own health is at stake.
From the companies’ perspective, there’s the additional aspect of people as a resource: when employees have health problems, they perform at a lower level or, ultimately, are absent more often. Health must therefore be the top priority.
To discuss this, we’re speaking with Sebastian Rentschler, Managing Director at Berger & Rentschler GmbH & Co KG, a company that specializes in producing high-quality video content for corporate presentations.
What role do ergonomic workstations play?
“Much of the work involved in video production takes place right in front of the computer. Even though we at Rentschler & Berger have long relied on ergonomic, height-adjustable workstations, the monotonous posture required while sitting in front of screens remains a noticeable issue. While regular back exercises and breaks do provide some relief, muscle tension is almost the norm by the end of the day.
As an employer, we are ultimately responsible for workplace health and safety, and looking after our employees’ well-being ultimately benefits both sides. That’s why we came up with the idea of purchasing a massage chair—to boost employee productivity on the one hand and enhance our appeal as an employer to the outside world on the other.”
Massages and Workplace Health Management—What Are the Benefits?
“There are generally always two perspectives from which to view this. From the employees’ perspective, the offer was very well received and the feedback was extremely positive. Given that their work primarily involves sitting in front of screens, a massage during the workday or at the end of a long workday offers several benefits.
For one thing, taking a break and changing one’s posture from time to time is very welcome. A massage during work hours relieves developing tension and thus enhances well-being. The break from screens is also an aspect that should not be underestimated, as the ability to concentrate lasts longer throughout the day when short, eye-friendly breaks are taken.”
“From an employer’s perspective, on the other hand, this leads to employees being more productive and performing better. Employees actively take advantage of the opportunity to take a break and, at the same time, do something good for themselves. The signals regarding appreciation for employees also play a role in such measures.
It was viewed positively within our company that we, as a business, want to actively contribute to the health and well-being of our colleagues. All in all, employees go about their daily lives feeling more focused, motivated, valued, and relaxed.
And when it comes to the benefits, it’s important to note that workplace health promotion programs exist in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. From a company’s perspective, tax incentives for measures aimed at preventing health issues caused by the daily work routine have an additional positive effect. In Germany, the current subsidy per employee is 600 EUR.”
So that means the decision to buy the massage chair was an easy one?
“The decision-making process went pretty quickly, yes. As a business owner, I was interested in getting a complete solution where I wouldn’t have to worry about anything else. The massage chair should be provided and then simply work and be serviced as needed. I found Massagesessel Welt that kind of offer at Massagesessel Welt .
Impressed by their website, I immediately scheduled an appointment, during which we went over every detail in person. The consultation was truly well-thought-out and professional—and, something I personally found extremely pleasant—it was also very tailored to my individual needs. What are the heights and body types of our employees? What are their preferences, and which areas of the body might be under greater strain or require extra attention during the massage?
Our employees were particularly impressed by features that allow the chair to cater to different users or adapt individually to their body types. The ability to adjust the massage intensity during the program is also a great feature that enhances comfort.
Ultimately, it wasn’t just the expertise and the high-quality selection of models, but the complete package—including professional services such as delivery, installation, maintenance, and training—that every business owner wants.”
Delivery and installation went as expected
“Actually, even better! A lot of things often seem like a given, but as an entrepreneur, you really learn to appreciate precision, attention to detail, and punctuality. Not many companies work as seamlessly as Massagesessel Welt does. At exactly 9:00 a.m., the team was at our door; they carefully laid down protective fleece to safeguard our furnishings, gave a crisp and professional briefing, and just like that, everything was ready for the first relaxation sessions here in our office. Truly fantastic.”
Workplace Health Management: A Win-Win for Employees and Employers
“Of course, as an entrepreneur, you also seek feedback from your employees, and that feedback has been consistently positive, underscoring that bringing a massage chair into the company was the right decision. Employees seem happier, more relaxed, and more energetic, and the time off is more than offset by increased motivation and productivity. Complaints and related sick leave are also reduced in the long term.”"It also boosts the company’s image as an employer, since word of the massage chair has spread among new applicants, and it’s a refreshing alternative to yesterday’s HR practices, which tout a fruit basket as their biggest perk. It’s a win-win situation for everyone."
Many thanks to Sebastian Rentschler for the pleasant conversation about massage chairs in the context of workplace health management. We wish you continued success and restful, relaxing breaks from the daily office routine at Berger & Rentschler GmbH & Co. KG.
